Chasing Karma

Karma has always loved silence; it’s the language she speaks. She found peace in keeping things to herself, until it destroyed her being. She, as a child, was only comfortable enough to speak if her only cousin was around. Known as the quiet Yamson, young Karma spent most of her days tucked away in her room unless it was time for church or when Lucio, her cousin, managed to drag her out of her room to buy Piattos for a quick walk to the nearest convenience store around their area. She barely talked to her classmates during classes, fearing the idea of her stuttering and embarrassing herself whenever she needed to converse with them.It was her third year of high school when her mom decided to send her to Thailand to study after the split-up happened, joining her mother abroad. Being surrounded by girls, Karma found herself gaining the confidence she barely knew she had. She made her first group of friends, participating on-camera for group projects and even leading the creative team for each. She felt safe, like finding herself in the midst of becoming. She traveled back home to the Philippines to study accountancy before once again making her way back to Thailand to work for her aunt’s company. It was then that she met Urassaya, and once again, just as she had begun to realize who she wanted to be, she made her question herself in ways she hadn’t before. For months, even years, she buried the feeling deep within herself. Urassaya was not the only girl she had an undeniable interest, but she remained steadfast on ignoring the idea of being part of that world, for she knew that if she did, her mother’s disdain would be unavoidable. They were very close. She had heard her comments on same-sex relationships before, and now, knowing who she was becoming, she realized she was doomed. Forcing herself with men, Karma met Ohm, whom she had a two-year relationship with. The lady loved him, of course, yet loving him felt like navigating a life she no longer recognized as her own.The couple entered a rough patch as their relationship reached the two-year point. The man proposed in hopes of saving their love from its downfall. It was Karma’s 24th birthday when it happened, and when he knelt down on one knee, the truth struck her like ice, jolting her awake from her own nightmare. She was not meant to be there. She was not meant to spend her life confined in a man’s world. One thing led to another, and Karma found herself withdrawing from everyone once again. She knew the news had already reached her family, which was proven right when she saw the hundreds of missed calls on her phone. Yet, she couldn’t bring herself to answer them just yet. She felt ashamed for having wasted two years of Ohm’s life and for crushing her mother’s hopes of seeing her walk down the aisle as a bride. And, of course, she felt ashamed of herself for not accepting who she truly was.Lucio was the first person she reached out for. Above all, she knew she would understand her while also waking her up from her senses. It was also the lady who helped her regain her confidence, guiding her through the judging eyes of others, the pain-filled eyes of Ohm, and the harsh sting of her mother’s disappointment. Her father knew about what had happened and was quick to bring her back to their hometown.Back in Palawan, Karma felt the love she had been yearning for through her cousin and her father. However, she had to move to Metro Manila, specifically Mandaluyong, to figure out what she wanted to do on her own, without needing the help of others. Her guilt had lessened after reconnecting with Ohm, who was now married to a woman named Prachaya. They were so welcoming and forgiving that Karma found herself chatting with the couple sometimes. She was employed as an accounts payable associate for years. Karma was genuinely enjoying where life had taken her, accepting the past, her true self, and who she will become in the future.
